Founded in 1984, Folie/Culture can be described as a center for contemporary art. At the same time, the organization pursues its mission of informing, raising awareness and promoting mental health by organizing unusual events and activities that provoke reflection on sometimes sensitive but always very important social issues.
Folie/Culture works closely with resource groups in the mental health and social sectors, and is supported in its actions by numerous partners in the cultural organizations network. Over the years, Folie/Culture has developed an atypical approach to raising awareness.
Focusing on the area where the cultural and the social meet, the organization favors cultural expressions that are innovative in their intervention strategies.
Our strategy is to create annual themes that intersect mental health and visual art, and thereby question attitudes and critique practices in mental health and the arts. To achieve this, Folie/Culture aims to work with artists, theorists and art outsiders who are willing to challenge ideas by supporting, producing, distributing and disseminating their work.
Folie/Culture also takes a critical look at current psychiatric practices. Active in Quebec City’s community mental health milieu, the organization favors innovative and alternative approaches, and questions supposedly scientific theories on “mental illness” and its treatments.
Folie/Culture aims to talk particularly to protagonists of the social and cultural scene, although the general public is systematically invited to its events.

Our mission
Folie/Culture is fond of barefoot tap solos, soapbox car races, straitjacket catwalking, apnea singing or any other daredevil practice adjacent to the visual arts. In fact, the organization promotes the work of artists from all disciplines and backgrounds, whose productions reflect the results of original research and encourage reflection on mental health issues.
The aims and concerns of Folie/Culture, as its name suggests, are twofold. On the one hand, towards the realization of interdisciplinary art projects and, on the other, towards raising awareness of mental health and, more specifically, the intersection where these two aspects meet.
