Besides being an artist who practices both in studio and in performance, karen elaine spencer is also as a curator and a writer. Her work calls into question the inherent hierarchy of our old values and examines how, as ephemeral beings, we occupy the world we inhabit. The belief in a linear movement where we move forward or progress is contrasted with repetitive actions that in fact lead nowhere. An action suspended in time − often over a whole year − creates for her a process in which artistic practice is inseparable from daily life. She works with what she has on hand and through the unusual use of materials or interventions in space, she hopes to change, if even imperceptibly, the perception of what is possible.
