At the Librairie FORMATS on November 22, 2013, Folie/Culture launched the post-event publication, Extase, la vie et autres pratiques extatiques.
This book revisits three artistic events presented by Folie/Culture in 2011-2012 around the theme of ecstasy: Extase, la bouche ouverte et on y voit la lumière; Extase, un chien écrasé qui scintille; Extase, la vie et autres pratiques extatiques.
The authors – Jason Béliveau (film critic), Stéphanie Bertrand (curator), Anne-Marie Bouchard
(art historian), Ellen Corin (psychoanalyst), Caroline Gagné (artist), Alain-Martin Richard
(performer and essayist), and Jocelyn Robert (artist and teacher) – deliver unpublished texts on various multifaceted art practices and offer an original reading of the works created for these events. The book presents the work of over 58 artists in the visual arts, performance, multidisciplinary arts, and video from Germany, France, Québec, and Canada.
Spirituality, religion, and seeking the meaning of life are important concepts for many people struggling with emotional problems. In the quest for meaning, the answers come equally from pure reason or from an excess of reason. But what are the paths of ecstasy today? How do we name and describe the return of religion, the spontaneous generation of new churches and sects, physical practices of the exalted body, the rejection of reason, and the rise of creationism alongside the exponential growth of social networks on the Web?
With a touch of irony, Folie/Culture assumes that life is one ecstatic practice, and that it is worthwhile exploring others.
Price: 20 $
At the same time, Avatar launched two publications: 40 000 ans brings together the work of 55 artists to push the boundaries of the electronic book. Diane Morin’s 8 projets + Le grand calcutateur II, 1998-2013 is a careful reflection on the work of the artist in the world of new media and electronic art.
