Almost a year after DSM-V+, dévidoir de syndromes magnifiques was held, Folie/Culture is proposing a publication that comments on and documents this event that brought together a hundred or so guests from six countries. The catalogue reports on the new strategies that treat- both figuratively and literally- the pathology of the living. It was elaborated during debates, exhibitions, lectures, round table discussions, projections, dramatic creations, manoeuvres and festive gatherings presented at this event.
Any person who through obligation or through interest, has dealt with the issues related to mental health knows the sadly famous DSM- the bible of current psychiatry, which catalogues the various forms of problems linked to the breakdown of mental health, and which places increasingly tighter limits on normality.
Both the content and the layout of the catalogue as proposed by Folie/Culture are seriously ironic about this handbook that, as with all dogmatic works, claims to answer
the broad field of questions solicited by mental health.
The 120-page work with 12 colour plates brings together texts by Benoît Coté, Genviève Desmeules, Hélène Matte, Viviane Paradis, Alain-Martin Richard, Nicolas Reeves, Guy Sioui-Durand, Lisa Vestal, and Jean-Pierre Vidal. Folie/Culture’s DSM-V stimulates a reflection that is both retrospective and prospective on delicate and taboo issues.
The launching of the catalogue was held at the opening of the exhibitions Le Royaume and Architecture of Survival at the Espace Virtuel, on January 24, 2008.
