Franco Basaglia et Michel Foucault : la question du pouvoir psychiatrique

May 7th 2004
Place: Musée de la civilisation
Québec

Participant(s): Mario Colucci, Pierangelo Di Vittorio.

In collaboration with the Musée de la civilisation, Folie/Culture presented Franco Basaglia and Michel Foucault: The Question of Psychiatric Power, a lecture by Italian psychiatrist Mario Colucci and philosopher Pierangelo Di Vittorio.

This first event organized by Folie/Culture in 1984 was in honour of Michel Foucault. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of his death, this lecture addressed the connection between Franco Basaglia and Michel Foucault, i.e. the encounter in the area of psychiatry between political practices, as exercised by Basaglia, and the intellectual reflection of Foucault.

Mario Colucci is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Along with the philosopher Pierangelo Di Vittorio, he wrote the book Franco Basaglia, edited in Milan in 2001. It is important to underline that Franco Basaglia was the instigator of the Italian reform of psychiatry, which led to deinstitutionalisation.
